Airless spray equipment is based on an electric motor (petrol driven motors are available) and hydraulic pump driven system to delivers paint/coating products under very high pressure up to 3000 pounds per square inch (PSI) to the spray gun.

Motor unit does not run or stops.
a) Check the origin of the power supply and all connecting cables followed by pressing the reset button.
b) Check the fluid control settings.
c) Confirm the switch in the ON position and the pressure control regulator is correctly set to maximum pressure setting.

Cannot Prime
a) Pump inlet suction filter blocked. Remove and clean.
b) Air in the hose or pump. Seal or replace.
c) Valve set on prime. Turn key onto spray.
d) Air in pump or hose or inlet filter blocked.
e) Check the piston packing has not dried out and the ball valve is free.

Material too viscous.
a) Confirm manufactures’ data for product viscosity and thinning ratios.
b) Check syphon tube for blockages or air leaks.

Pressure not being maintained
Check:
a) Filter to pump inlet – clean.
b) Pressure setting too low – increase
c) Air in either pump or hose – with spray gun trigger held open for 10-15 seconds to clear any air.
d) Spray tip too large.

Irregular and poor spray pattern
a) Size of spray gun tip incorrect- change tip.
b) Incorrect pressure – Adjust as necessary.
c) Material too viscous – adjust with correct thinner to manufactures recommendations.

Cannot shut off material supply at gun.
a) Thoroughly clean spray gun with product thinner/solvent.
b) Needle stop nut too tight- loosen slightly.
c) Needle worn – replace.

Spray gun will not operate.
a) Safety trigger on.
b) Inline filter blocked – Clean or replace – Adjustable tip blocked.

Spray pattern has Tails and strips:
a) Pressure too low – increase pressure.
b) Paint too viscous – see manufactures data for thinning.
c) Tip too wide – Adjust to reduce pattern size.
d) Spray tip worn – Replace.

Pressure does not increase when paint is drawn up:
a) Bypass valve in prime position -Turn valve to spray.
b) Air in hydraulic system – Bleed system.
c) Pressure valve incorrectly adjusted or worn sprat tip.

Spray pattern uneven:
a) Blocked or worn spray tip – replace tip.

Spray tip keeps clogging:
a) Contaminated material – Check inline gun filter.
b) Dry paint in spray tip – clean.

Pump not drawing up material.
a) Suction tube either loose or damaged drawing in air.
b) Suction tube not immersed in the material.
c) Suction Filter blocked.

Pump primes but no pressure.
a) Suction filter blocked – remove clean or replace.
b) Prime switch not set to spray.

Wide Width Wall Coverings

These wall coverings are wider than normal wallpaper width of 53cm and be as wide as 138 cm depending on manufacture.

Coverings such as Cloth backed ,Silk, Flock, Grasscloth and Fiberglass are available.

Surface preparation prior to hanging is on the same lines as for standard  wallpapers and should be free of all surface irregularities and contaminates.

The method of hanging wide width coverings generally requires the adhesive to be applied to the wall surface and not the reverse side of the coverings.

In all case the manufacturer’s details on size and application should be obtained and followed for estimating purposes.

Special Effects

Rag Rolling.

This effect is obtained by rolling over a newly applied coat of glaze a onto a previously applied  base colour  with either clean rag, or polythene twisting the rolling motion to produce a marble type appearance.  

Stippling

A decorative effect achieved by applying a wet coat of glaze over a base coat colour and tapping the surface with a stippling brush.

 Sponging Off

This paint effect is achieved by using a slightly moist natural sea sponge which is tapped across the newly applied coat of glaze removing some of the newly applied wet glaze coat.

Sponging On 

This design is created by using a natural sea sponge which is then dipped into the glaze then tapped over the surface turn the hand in different directions to produce the required pattern and texture.

Colourwash

This mottled effect is achieved by applying a glaze coat over a coloured base coat in different directions then with a brush lightly glide over the surface to soften the appearance.

Bagging

This is effect is achieved by taking a crunched up piece of polythene to form creases and tapped onto the wet glaze coating.

Dragging

This is a paint effect is produced using a dragging brush ( as in graining) which is pressed into the wet coating of glaze to form straight lines.

Frottage

This effect is created by taking lining paper (800 grade) crunched up then opened up and  laid out and placed over

 a wet coating of glaze and finely smoothed over with a brush.

Leather Roller

This type of roller is formed by taking cut pieces of chamois leather screwed into a roller sleeve. Once formed the roller is then used to run over a wet coating of glaze in various directions  to produce the required pattern.

Woodgrain effect

This grain effect is produced by using a graining rocker.

General

Environment.

Cleanliness and unrestricted work area is most important along with a dust free environment.

Surface preparation.

Ensure all loose defective material is removed back to a firm edge. Fill all surface imperfections with a suitable filler/surfacer followed by  thoroughly sanding/rubbing down to a smooth sound finish.

One or two coats of an oil based ground coat, colour to suit and when dry lightly abraded with 1000 grade wet or dry to remove any surface nibs, rinsed with clean water and allowed to dry.

Apply selected scumble in accordance with the manufactures recommendations.

Note: All wet materials should be strained before us to remove any contaminants before use and all surfaces should be tack raged to remove any surface dust.

Basic steps for Marbling involves:

Onto the prepared surface take a quantity of scumble and add the appropriate colour stain as required, and brush apply to the surface in an uneven pattern scrubbing the coating out. Using a clean cloth or sponge dab onto the surface.

Repeat with a mixture of the next selected colour by applying the material in different areas in an uneven pattern followed by the softening process. Repeat as required. If thin vein lines are within the pattern  either fine pencil brushes or the edge of a swan’s feather dipped into the colour and applied at various thickness using the feathers edge, and repeat the softening process.

Health and Safety

Light Oak.

White base with added Ochre. A little of raw umber is occasionally added.

One or two coats of an oil based ground coat in the appropriate colour should be applied and when dry sanded down with 1000 grade wet or dry to remove any surface nibs, rinsed with clean water and allowed to dry.

Apply selected scumble in accordance with the manufactures recommendations and after completing the required grain design and when dry apply one coat of selected clear satin varnish.

Note: All wet material should be strained before use to remove any contaminates and before use all surfaces should be tack ragged down to remove any surface dust.
