Bill of Quantities

A bill of quantities is a document used within the construction/ building industry for tendering purposes listing material, parts, labour and their costs.

Itemising all the works enables a contractor to price the work to be carried out. The quantities may be measured in number, area, volume, weight or time.

Preparing a bill of quantities is generally carried out by a qualified Quantity Surveyor.


Binder

Decorative paint is made up of four basic ingredients - pigment, binder, dryers and thinners (solvent for oil and water for emulsion).  Binder is also referred to as resin, media or vehicle.
 


Biocide

An additive which resists the growth of fungus, mould, algae growing on a surface. Also added to waterbased paints at the filling stage of manufacture.


Bittiness

This is a paint defect caused by foreign matter being present in a dry paint film, i.e. bits of dry paint/skin,  dirt, dust and fluff from rollers.


Bituminous Paints, Bitumen Paint

Paints produced from bitumen (by-product of oil) dissolved in inorganic solvents.  Generally black or very dark colours.


Blast Primer

 A holding primer applied directly after grit/sand blasting to prevent oxidation of the newly prepared steel.


Blasting/Blast Cleaning

A term used for the preparation of steel work using abrasive materials such as grit and  sand prior to painting.


Bleaching

Bleaching timber surfaces to either remove staining or restoring the original shade of the timber.  This can be household bleach or oxalic acid.  This should not be confused with 'Fading'
