Metal Casement Putties

A glazing compound based on linseed and drying oils with whiting used as the filler for embedding and pointing glass in metal windows.


Metameric

Colours which are matched under one type of light and change colour when exposed to another light source, i.e. daylight to tungsten lighting.


Microns

A metric measurement for gauging film thicknesses, (see Mil). (1 mil = 25 microns).


Microporous

A term used for paint coatings which allow moisture vapour to pass through the film allowing the substrate to breathe.


Mid Sheen

Degree of gloss level: Eggshell, Matt/Flat finishes


Mil

Refers to one thousandth of an inch. Term used when measuring a dry paint film, (see Microns).


Mildew

Fungus growth on the surface.


Milkiness

Whitish appearance in a varnish film (see blooming).


Mill Base

The initial dispersion of a paint base produced from pigment, resin and dilutants (solvent) which are mixed together and subsequently milled, from which finishing paint is produced.


Mill Scale

A layer of iron oxides formed in steel by hot rolling, initially blue in colour, which should be allowed to corrode and then be removed prior to painting.
