Acrylated Rubber - Acid Resistant

The ability of a paint coating to resist acid attack e.g. acrylated rubber.  Chlorinated rubber based materials are often referred to but now also referred to as  acrylated rubber.

Acrylic Emulsion

Water based material incorporating an acrylic resin to provide a hard wearing, washable surface.  See 'acrylic resin'

Acrylic Resin

A clear synthetic resin used as the basis of certain types of primers and finishing paints. Coatings incorporating resins of this nature are durable, flexible and have good colour and gloss retention. Different types can be used as either one pack or two pack systems.

Acrylic Resin

A hard wearing binder used in water based paints.

Acrylic resin is also be used in other paints to improve the adhesion and durability.

Activator

(see Acceleration and Hardener).

Adhesion

The strength of bond between one paint coating and another or the degree of attachment onto a substrate in the case of wood, metal, plaster etc.

Adjustable Tip

An airless spray gun with an adjustable tip (yellow) to adjust the spray fan width while in use.

Aeration

Introduction of air into a paint coating during application by brush, roller, dipping.   The small air bubbles/blisters can fail to flow out resulting in minor craters within the dry paint film.  Can occur in solvent and water based products.  See 'Cratering'.

Aerosol

A paint that is supplied in a canister containing compressed gas to allow the material to be spray applied.
