Baluster/Spindle

Part of a staircase which are the vertical uprights to an open staircase.


Bar:

A metric measurement 1 bar = 14.2p.s.i. (lbs/sq.in.).


Barge Board

The timber boards which extend from the eaves of a building up to the gable end.


Barrier Coat

A paint which has a shielding or blocking effect to isolate a contaminated surface such as nicotine staining, water staining etc. or to prevent tannic acid from hardwoods and bitumen-based coatings from bleeding through.  See Block Coat
 


Base

Referred to when 2-pack products are being used, i.e. base and hardener.  (Activator).


Basecoat

A term used to indicate the first coat of paint to be applied.  This applies  to all paint systems.


Batch

Finishing materials made at the same time to ensure consistency in quality.

Also includes batch to batch paints and wallpaper.


Batch Sampling and Numbers

Retained samples of products made, are kept for quality control purposes and identify the actual material and date of manufacture.

This can then be used as a batch to batch comparison


Bay - Bow Window

A projection from the main building line i.e. window.


Bead Mill

A horizontal drum used for grinding/dispersing pigments.
