Bleeder Gun

A spray gun which has no air valve and allows the air to pass continuously.  For use with low pressure spray equipment – the trigger controls only the flow of fluid.


Bleeding

Staining of underlying substances into a newly applied paint coating for example tannic acid from hardwoods and knots in wood, tar-based products and any soluble substances.


Blistering

Complete loss of attachment in small and large areas. Dome shaped blisters in a paint or varnish film caused buy moisture vapour building up behind the paint film or gases released from in and around blisters and resinous areas in wood.


Block Printing

A process of producing a wallcovering pattern were the design has been cut out into wood blocks for hand printing.

Blockboard

Boarding made from strips of wood and glued between sheets of veneer.


Blocking

Referred to when adjoining sections are coated, such as windows, doors and trim, particularly when water-based paints are used and the rise in temperature can result in the two surfaces fusing (sticking together).
Can also apply when blockage of the nozzle or tip occurs during spraying.


Blockwork

Blocks made from dense concrete to lightweight composition being  used for ground work footings for internal or external walls to be rendered, plastered or painted.


Blooming

Whitening of gloss paints and varnishes, giving a semi-opaque appearance with of a loss of sheen level (see blushing).


Blow-Back

A term used when spraying i.e. rebound.


Blushing

 
Whitening – milky opalescence, (see blooming).
